Detours into Unconscious Rhythms, Wide Hive Records’ second release features legendary guitarist Calvin Keys. Calvin’s career has seen many highlights, from his debut on cult classic Black Jazz Records, to touring and recording with artists such as Ray Charles and Ahmad Jamal. Joining Calvin on his first solo album in seven years are former Black Jazz Records organist Chester Thompson (currently with Santana) and renown drummer Ron E. Beck (who both spent time together in Tower of Power). Also featured is innovative percussionist Kenneth Nash, who first played with Calvin in Ahmad Jama’s group; as did up-right bassist Jeff Chambers. Roger Glenn is best known for his vibraphone work on Donald Byrd’s Streetlady and Blackbyrd. Other contributors include bassists Artis Joyce and Dimitri Ishshenko, vocalist Scheherazade Stone and flautist Tim Hyland. Kat Ouano on Fender Rhodes and turntablist Deejay Zeph represent rising Bay Area talent. On several tracks, writers Babak Tondre and Gregory Howe further develop the jazz-funk stylings of Wide Hive’s first release "Dissent". As a whole effort, "Detours Into Unconscious Rhthm" finds direction through many contributions.

Detours
Lyrics – Gregory Howe

Sometimes I’ve got to get myself going down hill / For the speed that I need to achieve higher peaks / But it’s never easy, when I’m gonna go and try myself / Because in stepping out of reason there’s a greater chance for / Searching into one’s soul / When I hit the hill, I’m thinking that / I’m ready to climb, I can still climb / I know I’m sure I can climb, I’ll peak this incline / I’m on my climb and given the time, I will reach it / If I just keep threading toward light, learning in life / If I’m constant inside and avoid lies / I know that I’ll level ‘ cause we all face obstacles / It’s how we learn to face mountains and problems / That we find depth and direction Following detours Breaking paths Moving further away and coming back / chorus where are the people / Under stands / All the people / Who’s gonna hold my hand?
